DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

HOME IS NOT SAFE ANYMORE!

Although home could also be considered a secure place for a few , it's not the safest place for all. In fact, with COVID-19 lockdown in situ , there has been a surge in cases of violence . All over the planet , victims of violence are more vulnerable and in danger to a frighteningly new degree of violence. Here in India, the National Commission for ladies (NCW) has raised an urgent alert about the increasing number of violence cases since the national lockdown began.

In addition to violation of human rights, victims of domestic violence can face several physical and mental health difficulties such as risk of chronic disease, depression, sexual disorders, PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) and substance abuse. Disconnection from social support systems is one among the explanations for an increased risk of violence during these times. As a result, there are fewer options to seek out safety or help for victims.

Normally, the victim could flee a violent situation by staying elsewhere, but that option isn't available immediately. Our country might get save from global pandemic but who is responsible to save the people from domestic violence? I saw a video on social media where one girl is using a sign language to show her as a victim of domestic violence. It was really scary to watch her go through this. What would be the mental situation of that women? From how many days she must be going through this unwanted situation. These videos makes us think what kind of a world we are living in. Even the home is no more a safe place! This is sad reality and cannot be ignored.

What victims of violence must remember is, to not blame themselves for what's happening to them. Violence is unacceptable and therefore the perpetrator is 100 per cent responsible. Acceptance of such actions may cause a vicious circle of abuse.
